As we prepare for the holiday season, the Santa Clara SR2S team wanted to share an early gift with you. Now available, both in this blog post and on our Resources page, is our First Year Report for the Santa Clara SR2S program. In it, you will find a comprehensive review of all our activities from December of 2011 through June of 2012.
First Year Look
The First Year Report looks at what our program accomplished between December 2011 (when the program started) and June of 2012 (when the 2011/2012 school year ended). But beyond the accomplishments of those short six months, the First Year Report looks ahead to what our program would like to accomplish in the years to come.
Some of the recommendations in the First Year Report, like bicycle & pedestrian education courses in participating schools, have already been accomplished this fall. Other recommendations, like forming a walking school bus, are projects we hope to take on in upcoming the spring 2013 semester.
The First Year Report also shows off a lot of the survey data the SR2S team collected in the spring of 2012. This data represents a “baseline” of how students and parents currently travel to and from school. We are going to collect additional survey data in subsequent semesters, and comparisons between the two surveys can tell us about how effective the Santa Clara SR2S program has been in encouraging walking and biking to school.
So how do students get to school now?
Our travel surveys in the spring of 2012 captured more than 8,000 students trips to and from school. We learned that almost one quarter of students walk and bike to school every day, which is great! What’s not so great is that almost two thirds of students are driven alone to school. We’ll keep tracking student travel patterns over the coming semesters; hopefully the next time we’ll see the number of students walking and biking to school take a larger slice of the pie!
